Niew Vineyards is an Oregon-based producer of Chardonnay, headed up by Cambridge alumnus Tai-Ran Niew (St. John’s College, 1988). Heavily influenced by farmer-philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka’s concept of ‘natural farming’, the estate eschews herbicides, pesticides, and sulphur in its grape-growing and vinification process, ‘creating an environment where the wine can thrive’. The result is a delicate, ethereal, and highly exclusive Chardonnay (annual production is in the region of 1250-1500 bottles), garnering extensive praise in the wine world and featuring on Michelin-starred restaurants’ wine lists.
